Howard School Park has made its long-awaited return to the community after an extensive round of upgrades transforming the 9.2-acre neighborhood green space into a modern recreational hub. The park, situated at 286 Mace Road, celebrated its official reopening ceremony on Thursday, offering visitors a vibrant array of new features including a splash pad, an enclosed dog run, and areas for both pickleball and basketball, as reported by the City of Medford's official website.
Residents can now find solace from the summer heat under new shade structures or challenge their physical and mental aptitude with the city's first Lappset interactive playground equipment; this notably includes the "Sona," a motion-sensing arch that invites children to dance and play with a press of a button, and the "Memo," presenting interactive play pillars that meld physical activity with memory exercises. The project, totaling $2.3 million, sourced funds from a Local Government Grant and American Rescue Plan Act dollars in addition to the Parks Department’s own capital improvement budget, an investment solidifying the park's status as a communal cornerstone for the nearly 3,000 residents it serves.
During the ribbon-cutting event, City officials alongside Councilors Garrett West and Kevin Stine marked the park's renewal, highlighting the transformative effect such spaces have on the health and vibrancy of communities. With families already flocking to test out the new amenities, the completion of the Portland Loo restroom later this fall will add the last piece to the park's functional upgrade.
Local firm Adroit Construction Co. managed the renovation work, which kicked off last July and culminated in features like the enclosed dog run where owners can let their pets off-leash, picnic tables, and benches inviting leisurely afternoons the basketball and pickleball courts offer active recreation options catering to a diverse range of interests and age groups.
