Senior students over at Miami University's Honors College are tackling a new challenge this year, and it isn't your typical final exam. In a shift aiming to knit together the fabric of a varied academic experience, the college has introduced a senior project mandate—a capstone that draws on four years of interdisciplinary study to create something that students can uniquely call their own.
According to a recent Miami University report, these senior projects are more than just another box to check before graduation; they're a synthesis of learning, mentorship, and exploration, but with a looming question for many students.
The idea, as Zeb Baker, the inaugural dean of the Honors College, sees it is quite holistic, "It's a project you're supposed to do at the end of your time here at Miami as an honors student," Baker told Miami University News, stressing that it should embody "all of the elements of your learning as an honors student together within this particular project."
Oftentimes, the journey through college isn't just about hitting the books or completing the assignments; it's also about discovering personal passions and finding ways to apply them in the real world, or at least that’s what the Honors College at Miami University is banking on by ushering in this new senior project initiative, a way for students to demonstrate their mastery and personal growth throughout their academic voyage.
