Michael Sullivan, with an extensive 30-year tenure in law enforcement, has been appointed as the next Chief of the U.S. Capitol Police. Sullivan is known for his efforts to heighten transparency, enhance departmental effectiveness, and build substantial ties between police, public servants, and the communities they serve, FOX 10 Phoenix reports.
Before his new role, Sullivan acted as Interim Chief for the Phoenix Police Department, where he was instrumental in navigating the department through a federal "pattern and practice" investigation and the restructuring of the department’s use-of-force policies. His leadership in Phoenix was marked by significant transformation and operational enhancements that yielded policy reforms and better community relationships, according to AZ Family.
"The Board is confident in Chief Sullivan’s experience, leadership, and approach in protecting the Congress as an institution to ensure the legislative process is unimpeded," U.S. Capitol Police elaborated on their decision. Sullivan's vision for the Capitol Police includes a strategic orientation to optimize the department's resources and staffing, a promise to maintain the highest level of professionalism in their mission.
The incoming chief, who previously served in various high-ranking positions, including deputy chief and deputy commissioner across departments in Louisville and Baltimore, will officially take on his new duties on June 30. Meanwhile, as Sullivan prepares for his swearing-in, the City of Phoenix is anticipated to release its list of contenders for the next police chief sometime in early June, the sources reveal.
