The Minneapolis Police Department recently took to social media to announce that two of its officers received top honors from the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA). Officers Luke Kittock and Sergeant Ben Bauer have been distinguished as "Honorary Officer of the Year" for their actions taken in perilous situations in the city. The MPPOA recognizes law enforcement officials who have shown commendable bravery and service.
On May 30, 2024, during an ambush that ended fatally for Officer Jamal Mitchell, Officer Kittock exhibited extraordinary valor. Despite injuries from shrapnel, he tirelessly worked to secure the scene, support civilians, and play a vital role in apprehending a shooter. Additionally, Kittock's contributions go beyond moments of crisis; he's heavily involved in efforts to assist the homeless through support programs and services within the 1st Precinct.
Sergeant Ben Bauer responded to an active shooter scenario on September 6, 2024, demonstrating quick thinking and leadership under fire. Faced with a suspect armed with a military-style rifle, Sgt. Bauer orchestrated evacuations and stabilizing operations that ultimately disarmed an explosive situation, ensuring the safety of residents and establishing control amidst disorder.
The MPPOA represents more than 10,700 peace officers across the state and has a substantial role in the law enforcement community. The awards conferred to Officer Kittock and Sergeant Bauer are not just personal achievements but also reflect the commitment of the Minneapolis police force in upholding public safety and delivering critical community services. The officers' exemplary service has earned them widespread appreciation, including from their department, which commended their "extraordinary bravery, professionalism, and service to our city."
