Minneapolis residents are bracing themselves for a sweltering weekend as the National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen issues an extreme heat warning, indicating that heat indices could skyrocket to a scorching 105 to 110 degrees this afternoon. According to the forecast, the intense heat is predicted to persist until 9 PM CDT Sunday, with nighttime temperatures scarcely dipping below the oppressive mid-70s to lower 80s.
To mitigate the dangers associated with the intense heat, the National Weather Service advises taking several precautions. "Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors," states the warning. As the weekend enters, residents should also heed advice about limiting strenuous activities to cooler morning or evening times. Though the temperatures at night are expected to offer inadequate relief, it does nothing to assuage the risks of heat-related ailments.
Beyond the heat, the weather service also cautions that the city isn't just facing a boiling cauldron of high temperatures. Starting Sunday night and stretching through midweek, Minneapolis and surrounding regions should anticipate "multiple rounds of thunderstorms," as mentioned in a Hazardous Weather Outlook. These storms could bring heavy rain and potential flooding, especially if they repeatedly traverse the same spots.
Adding to the environmental concerns is the prospect of severe weather, saying, "Severe thunderstorms are possible Sunday night, particularly in western Minnesota."
