Following a tragic shooting at Boom Island Park that resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) has announced an increased presence of Park Police officers starting this Friday. The shooting, which occurred on Sunday night, June 1, took a woman's life, left five men shot, and another woman injured. In a statement made by the MPRB, Park Police officers took immediate action in providing life-saving measures and are coordinating with the Minneapolis Police Department, which is leading the investigation.
The MPRB is making clear that park safety remains a priority across its 185 parks, where Boom Island Park is included, particularly in light of the recent violence that echoes a similar incident from July 2022. The installation of a gate in November 2022, as well as forthcoming measures such as mobile cameras and heightened patrols, are part of their response to safety concerns. Additional Park Police personnel will be on duty from 8 pm to midnight, from Friday, June 6, through Sunday, June 22, to help maintain a peaceful atmosphere.
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board encourages all community members and visitors to stay vigilant and to report any emergencies or situations requiring immediate assistance by calling 911. The MPRB reassured that their assessment of park use and safety will be ongoing, including the possibility of closing parking lots in the future, if such actions become necessary.
