Minnesota's infrastructure is set to get a significant boost with the Senate's passage of a $700 million bonding bill, which garnered broad bipartisan support. The bill, dubbed HF 18, is crucial for a range of state assets, including public colleges, correctional facilities, and housing. Senate Capital Investment Chair Senator Sandy Pappas (DFL-St. Paul) was at the forefront, celebrating this legislative victory on June 11.
In a statement obtained by the Senate DFL website, Pappas emphasized the necessity of investing in public infrastructure for the betterment of all Minnesotans. Despite the financial challenges arising from uncertain federal policies, the bill's passage, according to Pappas, solidifies Minnesota's commitment to its facilities and the well-being of its residents. Pappas said, "This bill invests in critical infrastructure projects that will benefit Minnesotans in every corner of the state."
Coming to terms after extensive talks across the aisle, the legislation passed with a 57-10 vote in the Senate and a 116-15 vote in the House on June 9. It now waits for Governor Walz's approval to take effect.
Senator Pappas highlighted the bill's impact on employment, noting the creation of competitive construction jobs. Pappas also detailed the bill's provisions for grants aimed at ensuring access to clean water. "Grants for drinking water and wastewater projects will help communities provide their residents with the clean, healthy water they deserve," Pappas told the Senate DFL website. With her eyes set firmly on Minnesota's future, the bill seems an essential step toward safeguarding the state's societal and economic health.
