Just ahead of the Fourth of July weekend, drivers in Michigan are experiencing a slight drop in gas prices, with AAA-The Auto Club Group reporting a three-cent decline from the previous week, bringing the average price to $3.26 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, as noted on the website of CBS News Detroit. This reduction is a modest one, underpinned by the fact that prices are still 13 cents higher than they were a month ago and yet remain 42 cents below last year's figures around this time.
With Independence Day travel on the horizon, nearly 2.4 million Michiganders are expected to hit the road this holiday, many likely grateful for the slight ease at the pump compared to last year when gas prices soared, with last year's highest average around $3.60 per gallon, a significant savings considering motorists are now paying roughly $48 to fill a 15-gallon tank, which is down $9 from the peak price in 2024, a detail given by WXYZ.
Regional price variations persist, with the greater Lansing area, Saginaw, and Ann Arbor experiencing the highest average gas prices in the state, while Marquette, Flint, and Traverse City are where drivers can find some of the lowest prices, with Marquette boasting an average of $2.99 per gallon; these insights are drawn from a report by Upper Michigan's Source.
Despite the downward trend, Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson for AAA-The Auto Club Group, cautions that "gas prices will likely face upward pressure as demand increases ahead of the holiday," a statement obtained by Upper Michigan's Source and echoed by other sources, signaling that although drivers are currently paying less than during last year's Fourth of July their savings might be short-lived if demand surges as is typical during major holidays.
Adding to the economic canvas, the West Texas Intermediate crude oil price has edged up by 55 cents to settle at $64.92 a barrel with a reported 5.8 million barrel decline in crude oil inventories from the prior week according to information from the Energy Information Administration, figures indicating an inventory level about 11% below the five-year average for this time of year as reported by Upper Michigan's Source, suggesting that oil market dynamics continue to play a significant role in fuel pricing.
