Commuters in Columbia should brace for a forthcoming adjustment to their daily drive as infrastructural transformations advance. Starting June 25, changes are coming to U.S. Route 63. The northbound bridge over Interstate 70 enters its next phase of rehabilitation, and with it, modifications to traffic patterns will be introduced. As reported by MoDOT, the already in-place single-lane, head-to-head traffic configuration will stretch out, reaching beyond its current location between the Broadway overpass and the Conley Road underpass.

The changes imply that traffic on U.S. Route 63 from Broadway to Vandiver Drive will be operating on the southbound lanes with a single lane for each direction. For those frequenting the southbound route, changes won't be as pronounced – exit and entrance patterns to the work zone will maintain its status quo. Nevertheless, northbound drivers should pay close attention as the usual right lane will convert to an exit-only lane for the I-70/U.S. Route 63 connector.

Despite the extensive bridge work and resulting traffic pattern shifts, MoDOT confirms that all ramps associated with U.S. Route 63 will remain accessible throughout the duration of the project. Of course, like any outdoor enterprise, the scheduled work remains at the mercy of Mother Nature – any unexpected weather could easily lead to alterations in the timeline.

This construction is a component in the broader scheme to enhance I-70, as part of MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program. A notable investment from Missouri’s FY2024 budget, ringing in at $2.8 billion from General Revenue, backs this initiative. The overarching goal is the construction of a third lane across nearly 200 miles of I-70, achieving a considerable expansion from Blue Springs to Wentzville.
