In a demonstration of technology's evolving role in law enforcement, the Monroe Police Department recently used drone technology and a K9 unit to apprehend a 17-year-old juvenile offender. The incident, which occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday, involved a repeat offender in illegal possession of two handguns, according to the department's social media post.
Following the "Raise the Age" legislation in North Carolina, officers initially released the juvenile, later obtaining a secure custody order through cooperation with criminal detectives and the Union County District Attorney’s Office with the goal to then charge him through a petition filed with the Department of Juvenile Justice; the subsequent attempt to serve this order resulted in a foot chase. The suspect fled into a wooden area where the newly deployed Paladin drone from the Monroe Police played a crucial part in his capture by providing real-time aerial video that directed officers and K9 Narco to the suspect's hiding place in a culvert.
The juvenile's encounter with K9 Narco concluded with an apprehension that required medical attention for injuries from a K9 bite, after which the suspect was transported to a Charlotte-area hospital and then to a juvenile detention facility. Facing multiple charges including two counts of possession of firearm by a minor, the juvenile's arrest presents a complicated intersection of youthful indiscretion and serious crime.
Chief Bolen expressed his regard for the combined effort, "I appreciate the hard work and dedication by our detectives and officers, along with the assistance of the DA’s office in getting this violent juvenile off the streets," he recognized the significance of the department's technological and K9 resources; this recent event underscores the balance law enforcement seeks to maintain between innovative practices, public safety and the complex nature of juvenile justice.
