The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office in Maryland recently used social media to extend an invitation to the community, asking them to pay tribute to a group of canines that served on the front lines of law enforcement but have now passed away. "Over the last year, the Canine Section has mourned the loss of several retired and current working canine partners," the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said, a tribute that particularly emphasized the deep bond formed between the officers and their canine counterparts. Sheriff Maxwell Uy stressed the impact of their loss, noting that handlers spend substantial time with their dogs, often more than with their own families.
The heart of the initiative kicked off with the remembrance of Canine Logen, a German Shepherd who was the department's first dog raised from a puppy for this line of work. Logen was paired with Sergeant Joe Stanton (ret.) from the tender age of 8 weeks and had a successful 8-year career with the force. As the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office shared on Facebook, Sgt. Stanton's decision to train Logen from a young age was risky, but "Canine Logen served MCSO for 8 years and had several successful deployments."
In honoring these canine officers, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office invites the public to not just reflect on their service, but also to celebrate "these amazing dogs that can no longer enjoy a head pat, belly rub, or, most importantly to them, a reward ball," which serve as symbols of the affection and reward these dogs worked so diligently to earn. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office message intends to commemorate these canines' unique service, highlighting their indispensable role in the fabric of our law enforcement efforts.
