Montgomery County marked the start of Pride Month with a vibrant flag-raising ceremony joined by a slew of local leaders and community members. County Executive Marc Elrich, Councilmember Evan Glass, and Congressman Jamie Raskin were among the prominent figures rallying alongside LGBTQ+ community advocates in Rockville.
Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to LGBTQ+ rights, the officials arrived in a #RideWithPride bus adorned with a "Radiating Love" theme. This initiative, now in its third year, aims to visibly support residents countywide through Pride-themed public transportation. At the ceremony, a statement given to Montgomery Council emphasized the vital contributions of the LGBTQ+ community and their continued resilience amidst adversity, as detailed by the county's press release.
Keynote speakers, including Yael Astor, an inclusion specialist, and Phillip Alexander Downie, the MoCo Pride Center's executive director, engaged attendees with compelling narratives of progress and persistence. The ceremony echoed Montgomery County's emphasis on inclusion, as witnessed in the flag's presence shimmering above Veterans Plaza in Downtown Silver Spring last Friday, previously reported by the MoCo Pride Center.
Congressman Jamie Raskin, steadfast in his support, stressed the necessity to actively combat discrimination, stating, “This Pride Month, and every day, we celebrate our LGBTQ+ community in Montgomery County and take pride in living in a County where the talents and contributions of all people are recognized. With our LGBTQ+ neighbors enduring constant attacks by the Trump Administration, we must recommit to fighting alongside them to guarantee the rights and freedoms of all.” These initiatives are positioned as a response to the diminishing federal support for LGBTQ+-specific policies, as noted by the same press release.
Marc Elrich reinforced Montgomery County's support, “In a time when our federal government is trying to erase history, restrict rights and fuel hate, Montgomery County is doing the opposite. We’re protecting our LGBTQ+ community and recognizing their many contributions to our County’s history and culture. Standing with the LGBTQ+ community is the right thing to do, and it makes us a stronger, better community overall,” according to the recent ceremony update.
Councilmember Glass, the Council’s first openly LGBTQ+ member, voiced the need for continual support and advocacy, especially in the face of a government perceived to be dismissive of LGBTQ+ rights. “As the Trump administration tries to erase LGBTQ+ people from this country’s history and culture, we must further uplift our community and embrace the rich diversity that makes Montgomery County a wonderful place to call home. Now is the time to make our voices heard,” Councilmember Glass declared, as noted by Montgomery County Government.
