In a quiet Derwood street, a tragic event has unfolded, prompting Montgomery County Police to turn to the community for assistance. A fatal collision claimed the life of 46-year-old Godofredo Gonzales Zelaya on Wednesday morning, according to the Montgomery County Department of Police. Zelaya was struck by a vehicle while on foot near the intersection of Frederick Road and Indianola Drive, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators from the Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are piecing together the circumstances of the incident, which involved a 2018 Honda Accord. The car, for reasons that remain to be understood, collided with Zelaya, and the driver initially fled the site. However, law enforcement authorities were able to locate and arrest the individual on DUI charges. The CRU’s work is far from over, as detectives now face the challenge of tracing Zelaya's family members, having been unable to do so thus far.
Montgomery County Police are urging anyone with information that could shed light on the collision or assist in locating Zelaya's relatives to come forward. Those who know something are asked to call the CRU detectives at (240) 773-6620.
