The scam involves a cunning ruse where perpetrators, masquerading as Sheriff's Office employees, spin a tale of missed jury duties or court dates, threatening immediate arrest unless a certain "fine" is paid. These con artists then direct their prey to purchase prepaid cards and hand over the card numbers. The Montgomery County (MD) Sheriff's Office laid out the specifics of the scam on their social media, underscoring the fictitious nature of these calls and imploring the community not to fall for this deceitful ploy.
Montgomery County citizens are receiving calls from the scammer stating, "My name is (insert fake name) from the Sheriff’s Office (insert fake Section). You missed a court date/jury duty/failed to answer a summons, and the Judge has issued a warrant for your arrest. If you don’t pay a fine, my deputies will be coming to arrest you immediately." The clarity of the Sheriff's post aims to educate residents and prevent further victimization within the community.
