A late-night police chase in Newton, North Carolina, concluded in tragedy when a 21-year-old motorcyclist was shot and killed by an officer. The incident began just before midnight yesterday, when Newton officers attempted to stop a motorcyclist, later identified as Camden Skyler Childers, for multiple traffic violations. According to a news release by the Newton Police Department, obtained by Hickory Record, these included speeding, reckless driving, and failing to display a license plate.
The chase led from Newton into the neighboring city of Conover, where Childers' motorcycle collided with a patrol vehicle on Northern Drive NW. Following the crash, "a brief physical altercation" occurred, during which an officer fired their weapon, striking Childers, as reported by WCNC. Newton Police officers administered first aid at the scene before EMS transported the injured man to Catawba Valley Medical Center, where he later died.
The Newton Police Department has since placed the officer involved on administrative leave, a standard procedure following officer-involved shootings. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is conducting an independent investigation, paralleling an internal review by the department. Newton Police urges anyone possessing additional information to come forward and contact them at 828-465-7430. This appeal for public assistance was echoed in an article by QC News.
