Last week's officer-involved shooting in Gresham is under scrutiny as the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office named the deputy placed on leave following the fatal encounter. The incident, which occurred on the evening of June 13 near NE 162nd Ave and NE Glisan St, began with Gresham police officers and Multnomah County deputies responding to reports of a physical disturbance where they believed one person was armed, as detailed in an official incident report released by the MCSO online.
After police tried to arrest the suspect, the man fled, leading to a search. It was during this search that a sheriff's deputy found the suspect in a nearby neighborhood, this is where the shooting took place, and a Gresham officer also used a less-lethal projectile. Emergency medical aid was provided to the suspect before an ambulance arrived; however, the individual was pronounced dead after reaching the hospital. A handgun was found close to the scene. Notably, the deputy involved has been put on standard critical incident leave while the investigation proceeds, with their identity currently withheld.
As the investigation of the shooting continues, spearheaded by the East County Major Crimes Team comprising members of local and state law enforcement, there has been no further release of information; this includes details about the deceased. The MCSO asserts that once the investigation concludes, the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office will conduct a review.
Authorities are calling on any individuals with knowledge of the situation to come forward; Detective Martin Daly and Detective Dylan Lerch are the point of contact for submitting information. Their emails are detailed in the MCSO statement for those who might have insights into the case. As the Gresham community grapples with the aftermath of the shooting, questions linger regarding the specifics of the incident that led to this loss of life; eyes will remain on the forthcoming results of the current investigation.
