A New Baden, Illinois man, convicted of first-degree murder for the death of his ex-girlfriend, has been sentenced to life in prison. Emmet Metzger, who pled guilty in April to slaying Alexis Maki in 2023, received the sentence on Monday, KSDK reports.
During the sentencing, Clinton County State's Attorney J.D. Brandmeyer reflected on the irreversible loss for the friends and family of Maki, stating, "While no sentence can bring Alexis back, I hope that a new chapter can begin for her family and friends and that they can continue to work closer to obtaining some semblance of closure," Brandmeyer was quoted in KSDK.
The tragic incident took place on November 4, 2023, where after shooting Maki at their shared residence, Metzger himself called 911 and confessed to the crime. According to a 911 call obtained by First Alert 4, Metzger expressed his panic and immediate regret, saying, "I f**ked up ... I did something so bad. I shot my girlfriend. I need to be arrested, please?"
It was also emphasized by the state's attorney that Metzger admitted to his action because "his feelings were hurt." Brandmeyer, at the sentencing mentioned, "He cannot compensate her family, her friends, and all of those who loved or were ever brought joy from Ms. Maki’s presence and existence." This quote was captured in a press release, which was referred to by Law and Crime.
Maki, a radiology student at Kaskaskia College and a bartender at Grit and Tonic, was remembered for the joy she brought to others. Metzger, who will not receive credit for the 583 days he has already served in jail will face the full extent of his life sentence as handed down by Associate Circuit Judge Douglas C. Gruenke.
