Early Saturday morning, I-10 West near the Highrise Bridge became the site of two major collisions, resulting in an all-lane closure and significant traffic delays. According to WWLTV, the accident happened around 8:30 a.m. past Chef Menteur Highway, forcing the reroute of traffic at the Louisa Street exit. The severity of the congestion was heightened by vehicles having to slowly move by the scene of the crash. Despite these hindrances, all lanes have now been reopened.
In a related report by WDSU, two separate incidents were confirmed—a primary crash in the left lane followed closely by a secondary one. The impact of these accidents was felt heavily on the Highrise Bridge, where eleven vehicles were involved. As part of the emergency response, "New Orleans EMS transported three people to University Medical Center." New Orleans Fire Rescue and police were likewise on the scene to manage the unfolding situation. Eventually, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced I-10 West's reopening.
Adding more details to the narrative, NOLA.com noted that the first wreck occurred near Louisa Street at about 6:58 a.m., necessitating the closure of westbound lanes. By 9 a.m., the efforts to remove vehicles and clear debris were still ongoing. The Department of Transportation and Development also reported heavy traffic that was extended to the Morrison Road exit due to a second collision that took place shortly after the first, at 7:09 a.m.
Despite the disruption caused by these multi-vehicle crashes, the coordinated actions of multiple agencies have now allowed to freely flow over the Highrise Bridge. As traffic regains its regular pace, the specific causes of the accidents and the condition of those involved remain to be disclosed. The New Orleans Police Department was promptly present, directing traffic and ensuring the safety of motorists as clearance operations were undertaken.
