The City of New York has filed an amicus brief in support of Dylan Lopez Contreras, a local high school student who was detained by authorities following a required immigration check-in. Contreras, who has no criminal record and is in the process of applying for a green card, was arrested after a hearing at a Manhattan courthouse on May 21. The city argues that the arrest lacked legal justification and violated his due process rights. Although Contreras resides in New York City, the brief was submitted in the Western District of Pennsylvania, as reported by the Mayor's Office.
"As detailed in our amicus brief, tactics like those used to detain Dylan Lopez Contreras create a culture of fear around all manner of court proceedings," New York City Corporation Counsel Muriel Goode-Trufant stated in the press release. She suggests that actions like these undermine public trust and hinder the cooperation needed for the justice system to function effectively.
Contreras, a student at Ellis Prep High School in the Bronx, reflects the city's diverse population. He previously accessed support from the city’s Asylum Application Help Center and is one of several individuals recently detained at immigration courthouses in Manhattan — this proximity to judicial hub of various courts places considerable public attention on the incidents. The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs Commissioner, Manuel Castro, expressed the sentiment, calling for respect and due process for every immigrant. "Our immigration system has been broken for decades," Castro told the Mayor's office, highlighting the urgency for reform.
