Travelers flying in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport can expect some respite as a major runway is set to reopen today. The reopening is scheduled nearly two weeks ahead of the initial plan, and it is a move anticipated to ease the weeks of delays and disruption the airport has seen. The renovation project on Runway 4L-22R, which officials say was last refurbished in 2014, has been an undertaking to address what NBC News described as "significant signs of wear" and to ensure that it meets the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) updated safety standards.
According to NBC News, the $121 million project included "milling and paving the runway surface, updating lighting, improving airfield signs with LED lighting, installing new underground electrical infrastructure, and implementing drainage improvements." The early completion was made possible by increasing shifts and doubling asphalt production. Still, officials caution that closures will continue to intermittently occur on weeknights and weekends to quickly finish the remaining work by year's end.
Despite this progress, the Port Authority has already indicated that the reopening won't immediately resolve all issues, as there are still flight limits imposed by the FAA until October. "Our goal is to relieve the substantial inconvenience to the traveling public from excessive flight delays due to construction, staffing challenges, and recent equipment issues, which magnify as they spread through the National Airspace System," acting FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau stated previously regarding the flight reductions, as reported by NBC News.
The Port Authority and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, alongside U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, have expressed gratitude for the accelerated pace of completion. "Thank you to the Port Authority for their partnership and hard work in getting Newark’s runway rebuilt ahead of schedule," Duffy said, "As we approach the busy summer travel season, this key milestone puts us on a path to further reducing congestion, enhancing safety, and ensuring a seamless travel experience," according to a statement obtained by Gothamist.
The runway's reopening will allow regular operations to resume. However, as cited by NBC News, continuous efforts will be made to further improve the telecoms infrastructure and staffing pipeline for the airspace.
