A dispute over a dog wandering onto a neighbor's lawn in Great Neck ended with a 76-year-old woman on the ground in severe pain and a 47-year-old man facing a felony assault charge. Nassau County police say Michael Kane pushed the woman down during a verbal argument that began after his dog ran onto her property.
According to News12 Westchester, the confrontation started as a verbal dispute between Kane and the woman over his dog running onto her lawn, and escalated when Kane allegedly shoved her to the ground. Nassau County police say she suffered severe pain in her left hip, arm and leg, along with pain along the left side of her body, and was taken to a hospital.
Police responded to a 911 call at 4:15 p.m. Monday and found the woman on the ground suffering from her injuries, per the Nassau County Police Department. Detectives with the department's Sixth Squad arrested Kane in connection with the incident.
Age Gap and Felony Charge
Kane was booked on felony assault and was scheduled for arraignment Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead, according to Long Island Life & Politics. Nassau County First District Court, located at 99 Main Street, handles all pre-indictment misdemeanor and felony arraignments for the county seven days a week.
Kane is accused of second-degree assault, and he is 29 years younger than the woman. The charge carries up to seven years in state prison.
Local Leash Rules Frame the Underlying Dispute
The argument that preceded the alleged shove centered on a common suburban friction point: an unrestrained dog on someone else's property. Under Chapter 14 of the Town of North Hempstead Code, which covers Great Neck, it is unlawful for a dog to be on private property without the owner's consent — the kind of rule that likely underpinned the woman's objection before the confrontation turned physical.
The Nassau County Police Department's Sixth Precinct is headquartered in Manhasset. The incident is notable in the county.
Second Great Neck Assault Arrest in a Week
Kane's arrest comes just over a week after Nassau County police charged another Great Neck resident with felony assault following a separate, violent neighborhood argument on the North Shore. Hoodline previously reported on that neighbor dispute turned stabbing, which involved a 34-year-old man accused of attacking a neighbor after an argument. Two felony assault cases stemming from neighborhood disputes within roughly a week have put a spotlight on how quickly local disagreements in the area can turn violent.
It remains unclear how the woman's recovery is progressing or whether the case will change once it moves beyond arraignment. Nassau County police have not indicated whether additional charges are being considered as the case proceeds through the First District Court system.
