In an effort to boldly address the growing housing crisis in North Carolina, Governor Josh Stein has stepped up with a plan aimed at expanding affordable housing options across the state. The announcement, according to a press release from the Governor's Office, outlines a multi-pronged strategy that includes increasing funding for housing resources and addressing the difficulties of high housing costs.
"Our state is growing, and people need a safe and affordable place to live," Governor Stein said, emphasizing the broad range of North Carolinians from low-income families to the elderly and disabled who are in dire need of housing solutions. The Governor's proposed 2025-2027 budget earmarks $35 million annually to the Housing Trust Fund, a pivotal move to possibly leverage further federal and private investments. Additionally, a $15 million allocation is set for the Workforce Loan Program, which is aimed to facilitate the construction and repair of affordable housing, as per the Governor's Office.
Aside from the financial boost to housing funds, Governor Stein's administration is also proposing changes to cut through bureaucratic red tape, making it easier and, hopefully, more attractive for developers to build new homes. This bipartisan effort seeks to grease the wheels of the housing market and create a more dynamic and responsive housing sector in North Carolina.
Targeting the ongoing Helene recovery efforts, Governor Stein proposed a significant $113 million in his second budget to help communities in western North Carolina. These funds intend to not only rebuild homes but also to provide vital assistance to families struggling to keep up with rent, mortgage, or utility payments—underscoring the acute need to swiftly address the effects of a disaster on housing stability.
Stein's comprehensive approach showcases a commitment to making sure the residents of North Carolina have access to affordable housing. "We will remain focused on identifying solutions to lower the cost of housing for North Carolinians at every stage of life and work to ensure every person has a safe place to call home," he said, according to the Governor's Office.
