Commuters in Union County are gearing up for traffic shifts as the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has announced a new roadwork project starting Tuesday, July 8. The planned construction involves a directional closure of U.S. 42 southbound between SR 745 and U.S. 33. This effort is part of a resurfacing and shoulder widening initiative aimed at improving the thoroughfare for future travel.
During the construction period, drivers will need to take a detour. ODOT's Columbus District 6 took to social media to outline the alternative route: "Detour: SR 257 to U.S. 36 to U.S. 33 to U.S. 42," and assured the public that U.S. 42 northbound will remain open throughout the process. The department has set an interim goal to fully reopen both directions of U.S. 42 by Fall 2025, providing some reprieve over the winter season.
In their Facebook post, ODOT Columbus District 6 stated: "The project has an interim completion date in Fall 2025 to have both directions of U.S. 42 open over the winter, with final completion in Fall 2026." This timeline suggests that while traffic disruptions are imminent, efforts are being made to minimize the duration and impact on regular transit.
