
An off-duty Harris County Precinct 2 sergeant was killed in a crash involving a U-Haul truck while riding his bicycle in Fort Bend County. The incident happened on Tuesday around 8:12 a.m. in the 11500 block of Gaston Road in Katy. The sergeant, identified as 55-year-old Manuel Edwards, was taken by air to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Click2Houston.
Earlie Gibbs, 63, was charged with failure to stop and render aid and intoxication manslaughter after a crash that killed Sergeant Edwards. Law enforcement gathered at Memorial Hermann Hospital after the incident. Edwards began working as a detention officer with the Harris County Sheriff's Office in 2006, later served in Precinct 5, and joined Precinct 2 in May 2021. He was promoted to sergeant in 2023, as reported by FOX 26 Houston. The investigation is ongoing.
The Harris County Precinct 2 Constable's Office released a statement remembering Sergeant Edwards, saying, "Sergeant Edwards was always known as a big guy with a huge, joyful personality around the office," and noted he often spoke about his wife and children. The office also stated, “Sergeant Edwards will forever be missed and never replaced in Precinct 2’s heart,” as mentioned by FOX 26 Houston. Support has been shown by neighboring precincts and first responders. The bond for Gibbs has not been disclosed.
