Get ready to bait your hooks, Ohioans, because free fishing days are on the horizon. According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife, the state is welcoming anglers to enjoy fishing without the need for a license on June 14 and June 15. This seasonal perk is valid at all public waterways, including Lake Erie, public lakes, reservoirs, streams, and rivers.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine voiced his support for the initiative, saying, "I encourage everyone to pick up a fishing rod this weekend and create memories with family and friends." During this special weekend, residents 16 and older, can tap into this opportunity—aligning with the only time of the year they're exempted from the license requirement. Anglers under 16 get an even better deal, with the ability to fish for free all year round without a license. Please note that all standard fishing regulations, including size requirements and bag limits, remain in effect.
Those looking to make the most of these free fishing days can expect to find a variety of stocked species in Ohio's waters. From walleye to hybrid-striped bass, the state's waterways are teeming with fish. The Division of Wildlife stocked over 46 million fish in 2024, maintaining a thriving angling environment for newcomers and seasoned fishermen alike.
