The Ohio State University is set to inaugurate its Engaged Scholars Academy this August, welcoming tenure-track faculty across a range of disciplines into its first cohort. As reported by OSU News, the academy aims to build bridges between academics and the community issues that resonate across Ohio.
The program includes 16 faculty members from eight different colleges, who will participate in a series of sessions throughout the 2025-2026 academic year. Jason Reece, Ohio State's vice provost for urban research and community engagement, outlined the agenda, emphasizing the development of informed, community-centric research that tackles real-world problems. He underlined the significance of embedding faculty within the community to foster relationships and enable a deeper comprehension of challenges faced by local organizations.
Assistant professor of chemistry Matthew Wu, one of the academy's eager enrollees, told OSU News about his anticipation for integrating civic engagement more profoundly into scientific research. Wu's aspiration is to broaden the scope of STEM fields, intertwining them with civic responsibility not just for science majors but students across all disciplines.
The use of a cohort-style format for this program is by design. Reece believes it facilitates peer-to-peer relationships which are crucial for shared learning and insight exchange, an element that Reece says excites participants the most. Wu concurs, seeing the value in collaborative learning and the collective transformation it promises. For Wu, an educator with roots in California, it's a chance to make his work resonate beyond academic borders, contributing to high-impact, public-facing initiatives.
Reece sees the Engaged Scholars Academy as a manifestation of Ohio State's land-grant mission, creating fruitful programs that effect positive change.
