Rep. Emily Gise of Oklahoma City was named Republican Freshman Legislator of the Year by the Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy for her work on policies supporting children and families. Gise has focused on legislation aimed at improving outcomes for children in the state, according to the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
Gise authored House Bill 1600, also known as the Patients’ Bill of Rights, which aims to make pediatric medical care more transparent and gives parents the right to make informed decisions. “I believe children are our future, and they deserve leaders who put their well-being first,” Gise said in a statement from the Oklahoma House of Representatives. She also authored House Bill 1601, called Archer’s Act, which allows teachers to use accrued sick leave to extend maternity leave for up to 12 weeks. Both bills are set to take effect on November 1. “This award is not just about me; it’s about the shared responsibility we have to strengthen families and ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed,” she said.
Gise, vice-chair of the Human Services Appropriations and Budget Committee in the 60th Legislature, was recognized by the Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy for her work with at-risk youth. She works with state agencies, including the Office of Juvenile Affairs and the Department of Human Services, on programs that support children and families. In a statement released by the Oklahoma House of Representatives, Gise said, “This recognition highlights the importance of practical, accountable policies that prioritize children’s long-term well-being.”
