Starting July 1, Oklahoma National Guard members will have access to a new educational benefit. The "Oklahoma National Guard CareerTech Assistance Act" provides tuition assistance for members enrolled in licensure or certification programs at CareerTech schools. The bill, led by Sen. Carri Hicks, received support across party lines, according to the Oklahoma Senate.
A new Oklahoma law allows eligible National Guard members to receive financial assistance for certification or licensure programs at any CareerTech school in the state. The support is limited to three years and depends on available funding. Representative Judd Strom and Hicks helped lead the measure. Hicks stated, "Our Oklahoma National Guard members are a critical part of our national defense, and in times of natural disaster here at home, assist our local emergency personnel and first responders in helping their friends and neighbors," as reported by the Oklahoma Senate.
Strom stated that advancing education for National Guard members supports both career development and service responsibilities, saying, "Supporting our National Guard members as they pursue education and career advancement is the right thing to do." He noted that the newly enacted Oklahoma National Guard CareerTech Assistance Act is expected to help build a more skilled workforce while also recognizing the contributions of those serving the state and nation. Information about the program, including the application process and available opportunities, can be found by contacting local CareerTech institutions or visiting the Oklahoma National Guard website, as stated by the Oklahoma Senate.
