In a recent recognition of his efforts to support military personnel, Rep. David Smith, R-Arpelar, was honored by the Oklahoma Veterans Council. Smith, a former Army specialist in military intelligence and the current chair of the House Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, was named Representative of the Year during a Joint Session of the Legislature on May 12, also known as Veterans Awareness Day. The Oklahoma House of Representatives highlighted the ceremony where he received a majestic eagle statue, a symbol of his dedicated service to veterans' causes.
Surprised by the recognition, Smith expressed appreciation and acknowledged the efforts of fellow legislators who have also served in the military. "I was totally shocked by this honor," Smith said. "It's my heart to serve the interest of our veterans here in the state Legislature. I respect their service and their sacrifices and those that their families make in order for them to serve," in a statement obtained by the Oklahoma House of Representatives. This acknowledgment comes during a period when the needs of veterans are increasingly significant, with Oklahoma's veteran population exceeding 275,000.
The Veterans Council, an advocacy organization representing Oklahoma's veterans and their families at both the state and federal levels, is recognized for its active efforts to ensure the service and sacrifices of veterans are acknowledged. The group focuses on securing benefits, resources, and support for those who have served in the armed forces. Rep. Smith, through his legislative role and membership in the Legislative Veterans Caucus, has consistently contributed to advancing these goals.
Acknowledging the importance of veteran advocacy, the recognition given to Smith highlights Oklahoma’s continued commitment to honoring and supporting the voices of its veterans. "So many others in our Legislature have served in the military as well, so it was quite humbling to receive this award and recognition. I'm very grateful," Smith told The Oklahoma House of Representatives in an interview.
