The Washington State community is set to come together this Sunday, June 22, to pay tribute to the valor and service of fallen firefighters at the annual Washington State Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial Service. Scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on the West Campus of the State Capitol in Olympia, the service will honor eight individuals who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Among those being remembered are Lieutenant Raymond Proper Jr. of the Tacoma Fire Department, Deputy Fire Marshal Brian Annis-Levings of Central Pierce Fire and Rescue, and Engineer/Paramedic Ryan Pleasants of the Walla Walla Fire Department, as per the Washington State Patrol release.
The ceremony will include a procession, a bell ceremony, and plaque presentations to the families of the deceased, as stated on the official memorial service webpage. Additionally, embroidered ribbons will be hung on the memorial pike pole in the honor of each individual. The webpage highlighted that "while their loss is profound, our Brothers and Sisters will forever be in our hearts." Lieutenant Leslee Smith of North Whatcom Fire and Rescue, Deputy Fire Marshal Phil Ferrell of the Tacoma Fire Department, Battalion Chief Ron Cato of Pend Oreille County Fire District #2, Captain Dean Warren of South County Fire, and Pilot James Maxwell, a Wildland Fire Contractor, will also be memorialized during the poignant event, according to the same press release.
This annual gathering not only mourns the loss of those who have fallen, but it also affirms the unwavering commitment and bonds forged among those who serve in the fire department. The service is open to public, offering a space for collective grief and reflection for community members, friends, and family.
