Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Office fatally shot a 57-year-old man who was reportedly holding his girlfriend at knifepoint. According to a report by ClickOrlando, the incident transpired at the Isles at East Millenia apartments around 12:45 p.m. after a distress call from the woman involved, claiming that her boyfriend had kept her captive "all night."
Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the woman and determined there was probable cause for the man's arrest. For an hour, they attempted to communicate with the individual, now barricaded within the apartment. As the tension escalated around 2:45 p.m., negotiators and SWAT team members were called to intervene, WESH reported. It was during this standoff that the man emerged from a room wielding a knife and moved towards the deputies, prompting them to fire their service weapons.
Undersheriff Mark Canty detailed the events in a press conference, stating, "At one point, the man came out of the room and moved towards deputies while armed with a knife,” Canty said. “That’s when two of our deputies fired their service weapons, striking the man." The unidentified man was subsequently taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The two deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on temporary paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure following such incidents. As investigations proceed, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will review the shooting, and findings will be turned over to the state attorney’s office for further review. The sheriff's office has committed to releasing body-worn camera footage within the next 30 days to provide transparency regarding the events that led to the fatal outcome.
