Drivers and cyclists in Wai‘anae might need to adjust their late-night plans for Monday. The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced an overnight closure of the westbound lanes of Farrington Highway, specifically between Leihoku Street and the Burger King near Wai‘anae Mall. The closure starts from 8 p.m. today to 5 a.m. the following morning, according to HDOT.
This temporary shutdown will accommodate pavement repairs necessitated by work to patch up a 12-inch water main that fractured in late April. Contraflow traffic will keep the road passable in both directions by way of the center turn lane, the statement by HDOT. Care and caution are, therefore, advised to motorists accustomed to the usual multi-lane freedom.
Bicyclists are particularly affected by this infrastructure remediation. With the westbound shoulder out of commission for the duration of the repairs, they're directed either to tackle the contraflowed lane or hop onto the sidewalk. It's not just cars that have to tango with change—two-wheelers too must dance to this infrastructural tune, albeit a quieter nocturne.
Gratitude in advance was expressed by HDOT "for its patience and adherence to the traffic control for Monday night’s closure." BWS also received a nod, acknowledged for taking the necessary steps to restore the highway. Come Tuesday morning, as Wai‘anae stirs to the sounds and rhythms of another day, the patch of Farrington Highway should stand repaired, braced as if the April rupture were but a distant memory.
