In a somber announcement, the Austin Police Department revealed details of a tragic accident that claimed the life of a pedestrian on the northbound service road of IH 35. Edward Walker, identified as the victim, was struck and killed by a pickup truck and subsequently by a sedan in the early hours of June 28. This incident, recorded under case number 25-1790042, occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. "The pedestrian, later identified as Edward Walker, was pronounced deceased at the scene," according to a statement by the Austin Police Department.
The collision is under investigation and marks the city's 48th fatal crash of the year, leading to a toll of 52 individuals lost, an increase when compared to last year's statistics over the same period. By contrast, in 2024, there had been 37 fatal crashes resulting in 38 deaths by the same date. Authorities have reported that the drivers involved in the latest crash remained on scene, were found not to have been impaired, and are fully cooperating with the investigation. APD has yet to fully conclude their inquiries and reminds the public that "these statements are from the initial assessment of the fatal crash, and the investigation is still pending."
Austin's streets are thus, yet again, marred by the aftermath of a collision that prematurely ended a life. The Austin Police Department is seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the traffic incident. A plea has been made to reach out to APD's Vehicular Homicide Unit directly at 512-974-8111, or to provide anonymous tips through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program at austincrimestoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477. This outreach indicates a community drive to understand fully, and perhaps prevent, such fatal occurrences in the future.
The loss of Edward Walker, a black male born on March 26, 1962, underscores a grievous reality that continues to unfold on our roadways. As the city grapples with an uptick in fatal accidents this year, it has become increasingly crucial to not only quickly piece together the circumstances that led to these tragedies but also to effect changes with an aim to safeguard more lives. Moreover, any individual with insights into this or other fatal incidents is encouraged to aid law enforcement efforts in unraveling these events that demand our collective concern and action.
