A tragic incident unfolded on New York Avenue in Northeast D.C. on Monday, as a pedestrian accident claimed the life of a 39-year-old woman. The Metropolitan Police Department has now publicly identified the victim as Sierra Nichole Smith, a woman without a known residence.
The events occurred around 9:32 PM, when Fifth District officers were called to the scene. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, Smith ran into the roadway, stumbled, and subsequently fell into the path of an eastbound semi-trailer truck. Despite efforts by DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, her life extinguished abruptly underneath the very wheels of commerce and daily commute that so often seem to overlook the fragile human lives in their midst carelessly.
The preliminary findings suggest that Smith was initially hit by the semi-trailer and, in a cruel twist of fate, was pinned under the rolling behemoth only to be struck again by a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban. Both drivers remained at the location until authorities arrived, which often is not the outcome in hit-and-run cases that sadly have become all too common in urban settings.
