An immigration officer with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is facing charges for allegedly attempting to use his position to solicit bribes. Amara Dukuly, 43, of Brookhaven, Pennsylvania, was arrested and has been charged with bribery of a public official. The criminal complaint accuses Dukuly of demanding payments from individuals in return for promises to expedite adjustments to their immigration status, which could include obtaining a green card, work authorization documents, or visas. These allegations span a period from approximately 2015 to the present day, according to a statement released by the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
In what appears to be a classic abuse of power, Dukuly is said to have leveraged his role within USCIS to extract personal gains in a manner he was not authorized to do. The complaint suggests he lacked the authority to actually provide the services he offered. Nevertheless, this did not prevent Dukuly from allegedly seeking to corruptly receive and accept bribes, which he then purportedly used for his personal benefit. This information comes from the criminal complaint, as was reported on the official website of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
The investigation into Dukuly's activities is ongoing and being conducted by the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Anita Eve. The authorities are urging anyone who may have relevant information about government employees soliciting bribes to come forward and contact HSI Philadelphia by calling 1-866-347-2423, selecting prompt number two, and mentioning the investigation.
As part of the legal process, it is important to note that charges against Dukuly are merely accusations at this point. He, like all defendants, is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. As the case proceeds, more details may emerge, which will provide further context to these serious allegations. The public is reminded to abstain from making prejudicial judgments and to await the outcome of judicial proceedings. Updates will be provided as the situation continues to unfurl, and anyone interested in the case is encouraged to stay informed through reliable sources.
