
In a recent commendation, Colonel Christopher Paris, Commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), recognized the exceptional service of several troopers for acts of courage and innovation. A ceremony highlighted the valor of seven troopers who rescued a trapped woman from a fiery inferno and officers who provided critical services during a political rally turned chaotic by gunfire, according to an official PSP announcement.
Among the lauded individuals, approximately 30 troopers were credited for their bravery on July 13, 2024. They had been assigned to protect a Donald Trump campaign rally when pandemonium broke out as shots were fired, resulting in casualties including the former President's injury, and the death of a rally attendee. The troopers' swift response included rushing toward the danger, aiding the wounded, and ensuring the crowd's safety. Their subsequent investigative efforts, played a notable part in uncovering crucial details for the victims and the broader American citizenry.
Lt. Matthew Bonin was also among the awardees, honored for his pivotal role in pioneering the State Police's prowess in mobile device analysis. Taking personal initiative in 2020 to get certified in cellular analysis, Bonin's drive led to the formulation of the PSP's first Cellular Analysis Unit. His team has since been instrumental in several criminal investigations, playing a significant role in the identification of suspects, the disruption of a vehicle theft ring, and the rescue of a missing person in dire need of medical attention.
Another commendable act of valor was displayed by a group of Stroudsburg-based troopers. Corporal Ray Suda and Troopers Nicholas Sully, Michael Zaleskas, Pat Regan, Jesse Strausberger, Kenneth Snerr, and Michael Besten demonstrated selfless courage in their rescue of a woman from her burning home on April 18, 2024. The troopers, who endured burns and inhalation of smoke, served as exemplars of the PSP's dedication to public safety, returning to their posts promptly after medical treatment.
The Governor's Awards for Excellence aim to spotlight the distinguished achievements and service of Commonwealth employees. For their exemplary job performance in the year 2024, ninety-nine individuals from nine different agencies joined the ranks of those honored for their outstanding dedication to their duties and their innovative contributions to the state of Pennsylvania.
