Protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have broken out in Phoenix, echoing larger demonstrations in Los Angeles, where clashes with the National Guard have escalated tensions. The Phoenix rally, taking place in the downtown area on Sunday night, was a peaceful affair focused near the state capitol building. "Most of us are Latinos, most of us are children of immigrants," an organizer told FOX 10 Phoenix, emphasizing the protesters' aim to show solidarity with the Los Angeles community affected by ICE raids.
As reported by Arizona's Family, the Phoenix gathering drew a diverse crowd. Participants carried signs demonstrating their support for those in Los Angeles, where President Donald Trump's deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops has sparked controversy and intensified conflicts. This move has drawn criticism from local officials and fueled public outcries against the administration's immigration enforcement strategies.
Demonstrators in Phoenix chanted "No more ICE" and "Donald Trump has got to go," as children and grandchildren of immigrants shared stories of their families' experiences. Video from the protest aired by Arizona's Family also showed federal agents, including those from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), detaining individuals as they arrived for their immigration hearings.
The Phoenix Police Department ensured a robust presence at the protest, closing down streets for the safety of the participants. "Our duty continues to be ensuring the safety of all involved while treating everyone with dignity and respect," they said in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. Despite the cautionary measures, events in Phoenix have remained peaceful, in contrast to the Los Angeles protests where, according to former FBI Special Agent Kenneth Gray, there has been a more chaotic scene involving tear gas and rubber bullets.
Senator Ruben Gallego condemned the president's decision to use military force against civilian protesters. "When due process was followed and only criminals were being targeted, there was little to no public outcry," Gallego's impassioned statement highlighted, criticizing Trump for what he deems an abuse of due process and the unnecessary separation of families. He proclaimed his commitment to protecting troops from becoming political pawns and outlined a vision for immigration reform aimed at fostering safety and economic prosperity.
