
A Phoenix police officer has been released from the hospital after sustaining serious injuries during an altercation in south Phoenix. The incident occurred last Friday near 19th and Southern avenues when the police were called to a business due to a man causing a disturbance, as reported by ABC15.
Authorities identified the man as 51-year-old Joseph Huggins, who reportedly was hitting store windows and doors, alarming patrons. Upon the officer's arrival, her attempt to engage with Huggins led to a physical confrontation wherein he struck her face, resulting in her fall, which caused a broken ankle and a broken nose. Subsequent to the attack, the officer was hospitalized in serious condition; however, according to officials, she is expected to make a full recovery at home.
Witnesses at the scene played a critical role, aiding police in apprehending Huggins a few blocks away. 12News detailed that he was taken into custody using a "less-lethal tool" and faces charges which, include aggravated assault and disorderly conduct. Currently, Huggins is being held on a $100,000 bond. As far as the injured officer is concerned, the department has reported she was released from the hospital last Saturday.
