Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey's family suffered a scare when their vehicle was involved in a crash yesterday afternoon, which also involved his wife, Michelle Gainey, and a bodyguard. According to a statement from the Mayor's Office reported by WPXI, the accident occurred at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Hamilton Avenue in Larimer just after 5 p.m.
An Allegheny County 911 dispatcher reported that responders were dispatched to the site of the collision. When his wife was inside, the Mayor’s vehicle conveyed more than just passengers. The First Lady was evaluated by medics at the scene and subsequently released with minor injuries. Channel 11 sources indicate that the Mayor's bodyguard suffered an arm injury and was transported to a hospital, where he's reported to be in stable condition.
The accident drew onlookers as caution tape surrounded two vehicles; one, a black SUV, ostensibly assigned to the Mayor's Office, bore the hallmarks of impact with its driver's side door damaged and airbags deployed. The other driver was unharmed and cooperated fully, staying at the scene following the incident. The ongoing nature of the investigation into the cause and specifics of the accident was confirmed, although the Mayor's Office requested privacy during this time.
Reiterating the information provided by the Mayor's spokesperson, WTAE reinforced that the First Lady and the security detail member were the only ones involved from the Mayor's party. Officials released no other details.
