The Raleigh Police Department (RPD) is emphasizing the importance of firearm safety in June, which is Gun Safety Awareness Month, their goal is to rally community members together on the shared initiative of responsible gun ownership and the prevention of gun violence.
Stressing the collective duty to promote and practice safe handling and storage habits, the RPD has issued practical tips for enhancing safety: firearms should always be stored unloaded and locked away, gun safes and lockboxes are recommended alongside gun locks, ammunition should be kept separate from firearms, and family dialogue about gun safety is crucial, especially in educating children on the dangers and the need for adult supervision in handling guns. They further urge community members to report suspicious behavior or the illegal possession of firearms, highlighting the shared responsibility in maintaining public safety.
In alignment with these efforts, the department has organized Gun Lock Giveaway events, set to occur on June 27 at two different locations, from 12 - 2 p.m. at 1141 Falls River Ave, Suite 110 and again from 2 - 4 p.m. at 6501 Mt.
