The City of Round Rock has stepped into the limelight with its innovative Tool Depot lending service, snatching the Neighborhoods USA's Best Neighborhood Program award for Physical Revitalization/Beautification. Launched in early 2024, the service lets residents borrow tools like lawn mowers, trimmers, and chainsaws, a clear step forward from the city's 2014 Tool Lending Center (TLC), which was more limited in scope, lending items only for community projects.

According to an announcement from the City of Round Rock, Tool Depot has recorded a whopping 1,279 tools checked out between March and December 2024, directly corresponding to the decrease in environmental code violations, like uncut grass and visible litter. An unintended benefit unlocked by the program, it has helped residents sidestep potential fines for such violations.

The easy-to-use system requires residents to create an account and access an online app to get into the building where borrowed items are stored. There's no need to refuel the tools on return, but keeping them in good condition is a must. This hands-off approach to maintenance and purchase of typically expensive equipment is one of the drivers of the program’s success.

Community and Neighborhood Services Director Joe Brehm, the brains behind the initiative, told the City of Round Rock on their website, "Since the official introduction of the Tool Depot, we’ve seen a significant positive impact on residents. Its success lies in our ability to help residents keep their properties in excellent condition without the burden of purchasing expensive tools or handling regular maintenance." Praise was not withheld for the city leadership either, whose support has been crucial to the venture's thriving status.

With the demand for borrowing tools climbing each month, the Tool Depot is a victim of its own success, facing a growing waitlist, especially during the rainier seasons when weed growth accelerates. To snag a tool for up to four days or navigate the busy borrowing schedule, Round Rock residents can reach out to neighborhood services or find more information on the City's official website.
