Good times are on the horizon for Sacramento party-goers and local businesses, as the City Council has given the thumbs-up to a new ordinance carving out entertainment zones across town. The decision aligns with efforts to bolster economic activity and offer residents and visitors alike a more vibrant nightlife scene.
In a move that aims to add a new layer to Sacramento's night scene, the City’s Office of Nighttime Economy, teamed up with the Entertainment Services Division, announced the formation of three inaugural entertainment zones. According to Sacramento City Express, the zones will be located at 20th Street, Ali Youssefi Square, and near the SAFE Credit Union Convention and Performing Arts Center.
Expectations for the zones are high, with Mayor Kevin McCarty expressing optimism. "This can help bring what we want to see," he told Sacramento City Express. "More activity in the Central City and more economic development in a targeted zone," he added, spotlighting the ordinance's anticipated benefits.
The newly minted entertainment zones will allow patrons to enjoy alcoholic drinks purchased from licensed establishments freely in public spaces during special events, thanks to Senate Bill 969, enacted in 2024. Tina Lee-Vogt, the City's nighttime economy manager, laid out the ordinance's intent. "The goal is to enhance the experience for those attending special events in Sacramento, and increase revenue for businesses," she explained to Sacramento City Express. She emphasized the balance between economic gains and ensuring public safety and neighborhood compatibility.
To ignite these zones, event organizers will need to secure a Special Event permit, ensuring that while the fun is had, regulations are heeded. They will be clearly demarcated, with specific markers like signs or sidewalk decals to guide participants. The ordinance builds upon dialogue with local business groups and seeks to perpetuate community involvement as the entertainment zone concept takes shape and potentially expands.
With the latest measure, Sacramento joins the ranks of California cities such as San Francisco and Long Beach in embracing entertainment zones as a tool for city life enhancement.
