A tense standoff in the Rancho Cordova neighborhood of Sacramento resulted in the arrest of a man wanted for robbery, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office reported in a recent social media post. The incident began just after 8:30 PM on Monday, when 37-year-old Ernest Polk allegedly robbed a man of his cell phone on Moraine Circle.
Subsequent police investigation led officers to a residence on the 2300 block of Loraine Circle later that night, around 11:00 PM. Law enforcement, wary of Polk's prior criminal history and the possibility that he was armed, brought in additional resources for the attempt to bring the situation to a peaceful close. While some homes were evacuated, others were given the choice to either evacuate or shelter in place during the hours-long negotiation.
In a dangerous turn of events, at one point, Polk emerged from the garage door brandishing what appeared to be a black handgun, before retreating back inside. The Sheriff’s Office’s Special Enforcement Detail (SWAT) successively evacuated a female relative from the scene, isolating Polk in the process. Efforts continued deep into the night with the Critical Incident Negotiations Team exerting to persuade Polk to surrender.
After the protracted standoff, which culminated early in the morning at around 3 AM on June 24, Polk finally exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident. He has since been transported to the Sacramento County Main Jail and, "is scheduled to appear in court on June 26," as the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office reported.
