In a significant turn of events, a Denton County jury has convicted Samuel Melkamu of capital murder in connection with the 2023 killings of Lilia Fernandez Ortiz and Alejandro Arrellano Fernandez. The Lewisville Police Department announced the verdict, confirming that Melkamu will face a mandatory life sentence without the prospect of parole.
The police force's commitment to ensuring the meticulous pursuit of justice was underscored in the social media update. "We are extremely proud of our team here at the Lewisville Police Department," the post read. "From the patrol officers who first responded, to our criminal investigators who worked tirelessly to identify, locate, and arrest a suspect - they did an outstanding job." The dedication of the Lewisville PD, alongside contributions from the Denton County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, underscored the collective effort behind the prosecution.
Assistant District Attorneys Michelle Dobson and Dustin Gossage presented the evidence for the state, with support from Investigator Paul Nathan and Veronica Brunner, the Director of Victim Services. Their coordinated efforts painted a compelling narrative that brought clarity to the violent crimes, leading to Melkamu's conviction for the dual homicide.
