San Antonio’s film industry is preparing for increased local productions following a significant funding boost from Texas lawmakers. Governor Abbott recently signed Senate Bill 22, which increases the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program (TMIIIP) by $50 million, bringing the total investment to $300 million every two years. By 2035, this program is expected to contribute $1.5 billion to the state’s film industry.
San Antonio is actively supporting the film industry beyond state efforts by offering its own San Antonio Supplemental Film Incentive (SSAI). When combined with state incentives, filmmakers can receive up to 38.5% in total potential savings. Funded through the local hotel occupancy tax, this incentive is noted on San Antonio’s official website as one of the most competitive programs available.
To qualify for the SSAI program, productions must conduct at least 60% of their activities within the Greater San Antonio Metro Area and meet additional financial and local hiring criteria. At least 10% of the hired talent must be San Antonio-based crews, aiming to support local filmmakers in both production and employment. More information is available at FilmSanAntonio.com.
The city’s Film Commission, part of the Department of Arts & Culture, is prepared to streamline processes, connect local vendors with job opportunities, and assist in identifying suitable filming locations. According to the Governor’s Office, the economic return is estimated at $4.69 for every dollar invested, indicating that San Antonio is positioning itself for increased prominence in the film industry.
