San Diego residents are grappling with the aftermath of a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place yesterday. According to the official statement, the incident unfolded after San Diego Police Officers were called to check on a man acting erratically in the middle of traffic on Coronado Avenue, as reported by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.
The individual, whose welfare was the initial concern, entered a small black sedan and led police on a pursuit through Ocean Beach streets, eventually crashing into a black Jeep at Ebers Street and Bermuda Avenue, the Sheriff's Office detailed. Exiting his vehicle, the man was then heard making suicidal statements and holding a knife, prompting officers to first deploy less lethal measures before the situation escalated tragically.
"The male while armed with a knife advanced on officers," the San Diego County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. An officer fired multiple rounds at the man, striking him. Efforts by officers to provide life-saving measures commenced immediately, followed by paramedics' transport to a local hospital, where the man was later pronounced dead.
The urgency of the situation left no officers injured, while the driver of the Jeep, entangled in the incident, complained of pain but opted out of medical treatment. Meanwhile, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit has taken up the investigation to examine the intricate details of the shooting, interview witnesses, and review evidence.
With the case's sensitivity and weight, the Detective's probe will stretch beyond the sheriff's office to the scrutiny of the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, to address any criminal liabilities the officers might bear, and the San Diego Police Department will conduct an administrative investigation regarding the officers’ use of their firearms. Oversight does not end with local jurisdiction, as the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the United States Attorney’s Office also watch the ongoing investigation.
The call for the community's help in shedding light on these events has been made by the Sheriff's Office, urging anyone with information to contact the Homicide Unit at (858) 285-6330 or after hours at (858) 868-3200. Crime Stoppers can be reached at (888) 580-8477 for those wishing to remain anonymous.
