In a move that will spruce up several areas around San Diego, the City Council has greenlit a series of park upgrades totaling close to $8 million, drawing from a legal settlement with the city's famed aquatic theme park, SeaWorld. According to the City of San Diego, SeaWorld's coughed-up cash for lease payments will specifically bankroll improvements across 11 city park locations, including major overhauls for the antiquated Robb Field facilities in Ocean Beach.
The largest slice of the settlement pie, north of $3.6 million, is slated for a much-needed renovation of Robb Field's restrooms and play structures. San Diego's Mayor Todd Gloria underscored the significance of these upgrades, saying, per the City of San Diego, “San Diegans have been asking for new bathrooms, safer playgrounds, and upgraded facilities—and that’s exactly what we’re delivering.” He elaborated on the scope of the projects, noting their potential to "make our parks cleaner, safer, and better for everyone."
The settlement total with SeaWorld, settled in January 2025, is $8.5 million, earmarked primarily for the Mission Bay Park Improvement and the San Diego Regional Park Improvement Funds. Both are vital streams for capital improvement projects, fed by leasehold revenues within Mission Bay Park. And while $560,000 of that settlement has already been allocated to plug revenue shortfalls from previous fiscal years, the balance remains earmarked for a swath of eagerly anticipated community projects.
Details of the funded projects include a $235,000 injection into the South De Anza basketball courts and parking lot, set to break ground in July 2025. Meanwhile, the Dusty Rhodes restrooms, playground, and parking are on the planning board with a January 2026 construction date. And various stages of construction are already underway for seven additional projects under the San Diego RPIF, totaling $2.8 million for things like Balboa Park restroom refurbishment, lighting upgrades at Chollas Lake, and repair works to Crystal Pier, as outlined by the City of San Diego.
