Last Thursday, an incident erupted into chaos as Austin Hills, 45, an heir to the historic San Francisco coffee company fortune, engaged in a series of dangerous confrontations, including a vehicular assault on a Tesla security guard and a high-speed police chase. According to a San Francisco Chronicle report, the security guard was enjoying a lunch break at around 3:15 AM when Hills, driving a Land Rover, allegedly began to tailgate and attempted to ram the guard’s Tesla Model X, subsequently pursuing him into the Tesla warehouse parking lot and colliding with another occupied vehicle.
Hills, who has previously expressed aspirations to run for public office, fled from the scene leading Fremont police on a pursuit that ended with his arrest by Napa officers, during this timeline Hills allegedly exhibited no recollection nor remorse for his actions, attributing his memory loss to "stress," as detailed in court records cited by the San Francisco Chronicle. At the time of his arrest, police discovered a collection of items, including a pressure cooker, a gas mask, and ammunition inside his vehicle, entangling the strange encounter with even more questions. Hills now faces two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of evading an officer as he awaits further legal proceedings, with his arraignment having taken place Monday.
In further elucidation of the events, the SF Standard detailed that Hills pleaded not guilty at his arraignment, and he is currently held on a $75,000 bail. The accusations against him involve the use of a vehicle as a weapon, resulting in an assault charge for the actions against two individuals and a law enforcement evasion charge, heightening the potential penalties due to the grave nature of the allegations, which include, among others, a threat of great bodily harm. Enhancements on the charges could mean Hills faces a considerable prison sentence if convicted.
