San José Clean Energy (SJCE) has just unveiled its plans to ramp up the Solar Access Program, offering a substantial 20% discount on 100% renewable energy to lower-income residents in pollution-stricken areas of San José. As reported by San José's official news, this expansion has been made possible by developing a new solar power plant in Merced County. The program, which started in 2021 and initially assisted over 800 customers, is now looking to reach beyond 1,000 households.
Recipients of the program are from neighborhoods consistently challenged by disproportionate environmental hazards. They also partake in state programs to give low-income families financial relief on electric bills, such as California Alternate Rates for Energy and the Family Electric Rate Assistance Program. Funding from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has contributed to the enhanced energy capacity that will benefit the additional 200 customers, as reported by San José's official news.
At a recent commencement in Livingston, California, the ribbon was cut for West Tambo Clean Power II, a two-megawatt solar farm covering 8.5 acres. Developed by Renewable America LLC and maintained by Radial Power, this solar facility employs solar tracking technology to follow the sun, optimizing energy production. This technological upgrade is pivotal, enabling the program to extend its reach to 150 more customers.
Like renters, the Solar Access Program caters to San José dwellers who cannot often install rooftop solar panels. Mayor Matt Mahan lauded the project, expressing via San José's official news that "Every San José resident deserves access to affordable, renewable energy regardless of income or the type of home they live in." These recent advancements underscore SJCE's dedication to promoting equity and creating a cleaner, more sustainable future for all its residents.
