The popular Almaden Lake July 4th Fireworks Festival, traditionally a spectacle of lights and celebrations in San Jose, has been canceled. Citing the event's overwhelming growth, which saw 30,000 people last year, and subsequent public safety challenges, Casey announced this significant decision. Traffic congestion and the parking chaos made it difficult for emergency services to function effectively, leading to the cancellation, as confirmed by Councilmember George Casey in a social media post.
Last year's festivities inadvertently set the background for a fire that devastated resident Cathie Bacosa's backyard and kitchen, prompting her family's temporary relocation to a hotel for five months. Cathie described her harrowing experience to San José Spotlight, "It’s the scariest thing that we've ever had to go through in our lives." The San Jose Police Department deferred comments to the councilmember's office, emphasizing the serious nature of these safety concerns.
Not only does the cancellation impact residents' long-standing Fourth of July traditions, but it also hits local businesses, which thrive on the seasonal inflow of the revelers. Sumit Maan, owner of Vanshu 24×7 Liquor Store, expressed concerns to San José Spotlight, acknowledging the need for safety and the positive effect such events have on businesses. "If the San Jose Police Department and other communities participate and they’re managed good, then we will be happy," said Maan.
